Oropesa del Mar (Orpesa in Valencian) is a municipality on the Costa del Azahar, in the province of Castellón, with origins going back to the Palaeolithic and successively settled by Iberians and Romans. Today it combines award-winning beaches, a medieval old town and protected natural areas just a few minutes from our apartment in Magic World.

Beaches and coves

With more than 12 km of coastline, Oropesa combines urban fine-sand beaches with wilder coves:

  • Les Amplàries — next to Magic World, sand and natural grass. Our apartment is right on the beachfront.
  • Morro de Gos — the longest, ~2,000 m, with every facility.
  • La Concha — a calm-water bay, with children's play areas by the shore.
  • La Renegà and Gurugú — coarse sand and rocks, a more natural and tranquil setting.
  • Cala de Orpesa la Vella and del Retor — small coves next to archaeological remains, ideal for diving.

Heritage and old town

The historic centre retains a medieval layout of narrow streets next to the castle:

  • Oropesa Castle — of Moorish origin, a strategic fortress for centuries.
  • Torre del Rey — commissioned by Ferdinand I of Antequera and later acquired by Philip II, from whom it takes its name.
  • Oropesa Lighthouse (1859) — next to the Torre del Rey, with spectacular sunset views.
  • Ermita de la Virgen de la Paciencia — with 18th-century L'Alcora tilework.
  • Oropesa del Mar Museum, in the Palacio de los Condes de Cervellón, and the curious Playing Card Museum, dedicated to decks of cards.

Nature and hiking

Oropesa is also a starting point for several protected natural areas:

  • Vía Verde del Mar — 6 km on foot or by bike to Benicàssim, along a former railway line next to the coast.
  • Desert de les Palmes Natural Park — Mediterranean vegetation and hiking routes inland.
  • Ermita de San Miguel, on Pico Bartolo (728 m) — a viewpoint overlooking the whole Desert de les Palmes.
  • Prat de Cabanes-Torreblanca Natural Park — a protected wetland, ideal for birdwatching.

Yacht club and marina

The Oropesa del Mar Yacht Club manages the municipality's marina: 706 berths spread over 7 pontoons, more than 60,000 m² on land and 14 commercial premises for watersports, workshops, restaurants and leisure.

  • Sailing and windsurfing school, and kayak school.
  • Diving, sport fishing and cruising sailboats.
  • Charters, boat trips and jet skis.
  • Excursions to the Columbretes Islands.

Family activities

Oropesa has plenty for the little ones, beyond the Magic World parks:

  • The Playing Card Museum, with the largest deck of cards in the world.
  • Marlon Kart (go-kart track) and Secretorum (family escape room).
  • Skatepark and a route along the coastal watchtowers.
  • International Puppet Festival, every July.

Couples' getaway ideas

For a quieter escape: a bike ride to the La Renegà coves, a relaxing afternoon at the largest seawater spa in Europe, and a sunset dinner with a view at one of the beach restaurants or in the old town.

Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) tend to offer the best temperatures for hiking, cycling and exploring without the summer crowds.
